Atonement scribe to pen Steinbeck adaptation
Helmer Tom Hooper (HBO's John Adams) will direct and scribe Christopher Hampton (Atonement) will pen an adaptation of John Steinbeck's East of Eden for Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. The book was first published in 1952 and tells the multigenerational story of the Trask brothers and a woman who comes between them. The studio plans to put East of Eden in production later this year.

Howard and Grazer going East of Eden
John Steinbeck's modern retelling of the biblical Cain and Abel story, East of Eden, is receiving a second big-screen treatment. The first film starred James Dean and hit theaters three years after the novel's inital 1952 publication. Now, the Steinbeck estate is closing a deal with Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment for Brian Grazer to produce the film, with Ron Howard directing and Paul Attanasio writing the screenplay.
