Jackson Will Not Direct Rings Prequel

Peter Jackson has announced that he will not direct The Hobbit, a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, due to an ongoing accounting and legal dispute with New Line Cinema. The award-winning filmmaker posted a letter to his fans on TheOneRing.net to announce the news. The studio is still committed to making The Hobbit, and a possible second prequel, though will certainly have a number of obstacles, not the least of which is possible fan backlash against another director. MGM, which holds distribution rights, is also hopeful.

WB looking to obtain Hobbit rights

With negotiations for Sony to take MGM under its wing being obstructed by various obstacles, all signs are pointing to the likelihood that Warner Bros. will be able to obtain rights to J.R.R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit. The WB, which owns New Line Cinema, has now entered the market for the struggling MGM ownership, and if they were able to get the rights to The Hobbit, would have managed quite a coup. This will enable them to get even more mileage out of Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and friends.
